EARLY /MID MAY - FISHING REPORT

OVERALL CONDITIONS

Weather conditions were much better than last week’s, the jungle welcomed our anglers with blue and sunny skies. The upper section of the Secure River is in good shape, the water level is holding pretty well, and it is clearing up everywhere. Nonetheless, some suspended sediments are visible because of some quick tropical showers up in the mountains. Big fish are still travelling upstream from the lower section.

Day after day more fish are showing their tails in the upper pools the river, it is loading quick and with good sizes. Also big schools of baitfish are swimming upstream with every rain that makes the river rise and get a bit murky.

All our guests from the last week were repeaters and they were glad to see the river and the fishing in such good conditions.

RIVER CONDITIONS

The water is getting clearer and the level remains adequate for both wading and attempting some shots from the boat in some spots of the lower section of Secure river from Secure Lodge. All

The short showers that we had, made Secure and Pluma rivers rise a bit and get darker, making the fish less spooky and more permissive.

FISHING

Secure Lodge

The fishing was very good and stable, we had lots of action in the lower beat either wading or from the boat, We had very good chances in the upper section for spotting fish. Last week we landed 4 Pacu and around 10 big Yatoranas, being a plus for the great dorado moments we are experiencing.

The Yahana creek tributary of Secure river, is in the best water conditions, last week we had the chance to go further upstream into the Secure river, we saw lots of big schools of Pacu and some nice big Dorados.

Some of them wanted to go far upstream, so we took our chances and journeyed upstream looking for new scenarios, reaching a faraway spot called “El Kerosene”. Up there we found a great amount of fish, especially Pacu. 90% of the upstream pools are the homes of huge schools of pacu.

As we know Pacu is probably the hardest fish to catch in these waters, but lucky us we managed to land some good ones, we had around ten takes and landed 4 of them.

There were at least 3 grand slams in the week, the last one surprised Fabian, one of our guides. He encountered a 17 pounds Pacu in the lower secure beats from Secure Lodge, after landing a nice 4-pound Yatorana and some big Dorados.

Pluma Lodge

The first fifteen days of May, we have had big movement of different species of fish from Tsimane Basin: From smallest and different kind of baitfish, to sabalos, small dorados, yatoranas, pacues and finally big dorados.

The size of Dorados and Pacues that have entered Pluma area are in average a little bit smaller that normal for Tsimane, but this do not means that big pieces where not present during the last two weeks.

The lower stretches of Pluma and the Coruya area (Secure River) where the ones with biggest concentration of fishes. Pacues started to be found in Itirizama River bigger pools. As good as pacu fishing is, sight casting in pools after spotting them followed by many strikes was the highlight of the last week. But also, as hard as pacu fishing is, majority of fish won the battle with cuts ending the story for our guests.

The best surprise was the fishing at upper Pluma beats. The biggest catches during early/mid May, happen in upper Pluma. Smaller runs and pools holding big fish made fishing astonishing for some lucky anglers.

Secure Lodge

The average per boat per day was around 8 to 14 good size dorados, all of them in the range of 6 to 23/24 pounds.

Jumped and takes 20 to 30.

4 Big Pacu. One in the 20 pounds range

10 Yatoranas all of them in the 4-6 pounds range

Pluma Lodge

The average size/strikes was:

Lower Pluma: eventually fished due colored water due scattered showers, but average size around 18 pounds.

Upper Pluma: Around 15 strikes per angler/day ranging 10-15 pounds, with some big dorado on 20 pounds range almost every day!

Itirizama: 5-10 strikes per angler/day ranging 8-15 pounds

Coruya Area – Secure River: 15 strikes per angler/day ranging 15-20 pounds with some beautiful trophies around 25 pounds.

THE FINEST SEA TROUT FISHERY OF THE WORLD !

When we think about Tierra del Fuego, the first thing that springs to our mind is big trout, but strong winds and a boring natural scenery. Far End Rivers settled a new standard of Sea Run brown trout fishing. Unique rivers and sceneries that have changed the all existent fishing concept, and offer anglers the ultimate challenge: Big sea runs in small rivers using single hand rods.

The size of fish in such small waters using fine sea trout flyfishing techniques establish Far End Rivers in the one of the best anadromous fisheries of the world.

The findings of an extensive biological research that launched in 2009 reported that a very good number of fish started migrating in November and December and were found around the sea mouth and the lowest stretches of Irigoyen River.

Our conservative efforts and biological studies not only benefit the entire ecosystem but also help us

understating sea trout migration in Irigoyen River. Therefore, we are proud to announce our next season opening in early December. Surf fishing for sea bass is also an astonishing experience for those who want to cast in the wildest side of the end of the world.

For 2011/12 season we have two pack options: Exclusive weeks and standard weeks. The first one is similar to the standard 6 -day-week but it is based on a sole occupancy (lodging and guides). This allows anglers to fish in the river and have one personal exclusive guide. As a result, fishing is much more technical and delightful. It is essential that programs do not overlap each other during the same week.

LOCATION

Far End Rivers Lodge is located in Tierra del Fuego Island, the southernmost province of Argentina.

7 Flights per day are available from Buenos Aires in and out from Ushuaia International Airport.

The cabins are located in Maria Luisa Estancia which is 3 - 3 1/2 hour drive from Ushuaia International Airport or Rio Grande Airport.

FISHING

The fishing is done 100% wading, using ARGO 6x6 ATV to be able to move to the pools and between them. There is around 25 miles private water access.

SPECIES: Sea-run brown trout, brown trout, rainbow and Robalo (Sea Bass) In the sea & over mouth of Irigoyen River.

SEASON: It starts early December and finishes by the end of April.

2011 SEASON LAUNCHES !!

All members of Untamed Angling team, are really proud to make Tsimane 2011 season launch with many improvements in the whole operation. Our incentive is to never stop and comes from adding new fonts of sustainable energy to the lodges, one new refugee settled on the Secure river headwaters (a real mini lodge), or new tracks and vehicles in Pluma area, deserving much more fishable water. Finally there are some hidden secrets deep inside the jungle which every angler certainly never dreamed of.

We are almost full for the entire season with more than 250 lucky anglers who will experience the most exciting fly fishing destination of a generation.

Overall Conditions:

We have started the Tsimane season better than we could imagine.
Conditions look very promising in every aspect.
The rivers are loaded with small baitfish, the perfect preys for dorados and pirapitingas. The 2010/1 summer in Bolivian Amazon was a very strong rainy season, and kept all rivers in high levels throughout the whole summer.

The amazon system is fed by cycles of heavy rains every 3 or 4 years and last summer we had the biggest rainy season from last 8 years, which is fantastic for fishing. All movements of fish duplicate and the dorado as the top of the chain, receive a boost potential.
This is spectacular for all ecosystem and obviously for the fishing. Massive schools of baitfish migrated from late december and now followed by dorados everywhere. Lower secure areas are loaded with huge schools of sabalos (the main source of food for dorados).
The two first weeks of the season was spectacular, with Pluma and Secure rivers a little bit higher than usual, but fishing moments was astonishing. We are sure that we will have an epic season.

Weather conditions were pretty unstable, it changed from sunny hot days to big tropical rains, but neither kept us away from the water or catching fish.

River Conditions:

The Secure river level was a little bit high for wading in some of the beats, but was really good to attempt fishing from the boat in the log structure of the lower section. The latter enables lots of new fishing possibilities that greatly reward our anglers at this time of the season.

The water remains a bit murky but enough clarity for fishing and making the fish way more aggressive.

The Pluma river started with alternations of high and low levels, and also moments of murky and clear water. This makes fishing more technical, but in many moments very funny. Big fish are present and being very aggressive. Itirizama River is as ever, generous for the most dedicated anglers.

Fishing:

Secure - The fishing was epic in Secure during the week. We had crazy action in the lower bit; big schools of minnows migrating upstream with the Dorados chasing them all around. There were many memorable days and every fisherman took a bite of the cake.

During this past week we landed a great amount of Dorados from 8 to 16 pounds and several fish in the 20+ range.

The number of strikes was hard to follow, most of the days we lost the number. We also spotted Pacu feeding under trees that were dropping big yellow fruits. We had two big ones on the hook but couldn’t land them.We were close!

Pluma - The fishing for the first group of anglers was really interesting. As expected lower beats of Pluma river deserve really good numbers of Dorados in the 16+ pound range. Itirizama, and upper Pluma are surprisingly prolific for this part of the season. The reason is the high water levels during the summer that brought massive schools of small baitfish.

Total Catches:

The number of catches on the last 10 days is hard to remember, but it was way more than enough for every angler. 20+ pounders were caught (and some of them - lost) by all anglers.

Best Moment of the week:

There were many great moments during the past week. We named a new pool in secure lodge area “Punta Bilbao” in honour to the first spanish anglers fishing these waters, and the great fishing they experienced there. A real trophy in Pluma river touched the feelings of experienced anglers!

Fishing Report - Feb 5th - 12th

This past week Kirk Deeter, Rodrigo and Rany payed the Northern Patagonia Fishing Club a visit. We decided to give the regular program a twist, focusing in experiencing the most pure and classic dry fly fishing someone can get in the earth: targeting big fish, followed by analyzing the water and developing an accurate strategy. Once again, this new fishing spot showed beyond doubt that there are still untamed places here in Patagonia (and we have found them!), with alluring scenarios, marvelous rivers, and amazing wild trouts.

During the week, we mostly fished our secret streams, which are very different from each other in sense of freestone structure and spring creek shape. Each of them has its own personality and each of them holds a unique way of fishing. Once more, our guides proved themselves to be the best in this area, as they know these spots like nobody else does, and they know how and when to fish them.

SECRET RIVERS

Secret River A

-Water level was good but not the best, making the fishing more technical. Anyway, it was exactly what we were longing for. Kirk kicked off the fishing day with a fat 20-inch rainbow in the very first pool. As we were walking through the stream, we managed to hook a large number of rainbows in the 16 to 20-inch range. We hooked a couple of big browns too, but unfortunately they broke the tippet right on the takes. Anyhow, by the end of the day we had landed 15 big fish and broke or missed another 20 between all of us. Walking and wading in this river is super friendly and easy; most of the fishing happens from the bank and therefore casting is not a problem.

Secret River B

-This hot spot is probably the best if you’re searching specifically for sight casting directly to the fish and not to the rise. In this river the water is extremely transparent and the bottom makes good contrast with the trouts, allowing fishermen to target them. The river is surrounded by high shrubby hills, enabling the anglers to target fish from up high and descend through the bushes to try catch their fish. Here, trouts are more permissive in terms of fly size. However, a long cast around 40 to 50 feet is highly needed, and a good presentation of the fly makes a big difference. The trout community in this river is particularly good and is consists mostly of big browns from 20 to 25 inches. Rainbows are found too, and they are very strong as well.

When trouts are in the pockets, making a good drift in the right spot is guarantee of fish, however, they can become a real challenge when they hold up in the pools. Approaching softly and making a first accurate cast are probably the most important things to do in this site.

Secret River C

-It was the first time we fished this river in the season.. We decided to go and scout it, and for our surprise it was smashing. To our bad luck, big storms forced us to ran away, so we weren’t able to fish it a lot. Nonetheless, in the few hours we fished it, we managed to land a 6-pound brown that appeared to scene attacking a smaller trout that I was playing. It reminded me that not only Dorados are that aggressive.

This river can be split up in two parts: the Pockets or Canyon and the Spring Creek. The upper section runs straight into the mountains, making the river really strong and creating plenty of riffles with pockets. On the other hand, the lower sections run trough the valley, making it resemble a spring creek. Depending on the water level or the kind of fishing wanted, the guides decide were to hit it.

Fishing that day was memorable, as we combined an exciting afternoon in this secret spot with a splendid fishing morning in the Quillen River.

CALFIQUITRA RIVER

-What a magical place! At this time of the year, water level in the Calfiquitra is very low, so the river looks like a spring creek, with very soft currents swirling the weeds in the bottom as if they were dancing in some mysterious rhythm.

This river is the right one for attempting a Patagonic grand slam, as all rainbows, brooks and browns cruise these waters. The low water conditions, pushed us to go very light on the tackle, we used #3/4 weight rods, 6/7x tippet and small flies. That day, we could to do both kinds of sight fishing: spotting fish from up high in the hills and find them feeding on top.

Again, Kirk opened the day landing a big brook we had spotted from the top of the hill. Going down to the pools through the shrubs was probably the hardest part of the day. After the mountain section of the river finished, we started to walk upstream where the river looks more like a spring creek in search of rising fish, finding lots of them. In that day we were able to land some big rainbows, but broke the line with plenty of them; fishing with 7 x is not easy at all.

QUILLEN RIVER

-The Quillen River was in a fine shape and trouts there were crazily feeding on a caddis hatch. We fished the mid-section which has mostly riffles, runs and some deep holes at the end of the riffles. In this river, fish are all around and you need to know where to find the big ones. We fished the Quillen only for a couple hours in the morning, but was more than enough to see the river is at its best. After lots of small trouts going cuckoo for our caddis, I decided to try a big stonefly nymph; it did not take too long before a big brown devoured the fly.The Quillen holds an enormous trout population in all the size ranges, making this river an outstanding place for all kinds of angler, from really experienced ones to very beginners.

River Condition and Water Clarity

• Calfiquitra: The river now is with low water level, making the fishing way more technical and interesting.

• Secret Rivers: All of them are in splendid shape. Water is in perfect level in some of them and lower in others. Clarity is excellent.

• Quillen: As we expected it to be, the Quillen is perfect and full of life. River runs slowly and all the hot spots are reachable.

Fishing report - Jan 2nd week

OVERALL CONDITIONS: The river was dropping slowly though out the week until the wind changed from northwest to southeast (wind from Antarctic) which turned the hair temperature from 15˚ C (average) to 6˚ C and also brought lot of continuous rain. It was strange because the river didn’t rise instantaneously the next days, it rose constantly but slowly. That allowed us fishing the river the whole week without stopping.

RIVER CONDITIONS: The river always is surprising us with new changes on structure due floods. I think that this is the year that the sea pool had the biggest change, which turned into a very big pool.

The river had a good level at the beginning of the week. From Monday on started raining continuously until the end of the week. The river rose slowly and was still clear until Saturday morning, which finally turned muddy. The guests were lucky to be able to fish the whole week.

FISHING: It was an outstanding week for one the anglers, which broke our record on catches for a single rod in one week. At the beginning of the week Floating lines and long leaders were used with very small flies (wonder bugs and other king of rubber legs), after the river rise we had to start using larger flies like leeches, temple dogs, sunray shadow and others. The size of the fish landed ranged from 4 to 19 pounds.

TOTAL CATCHES: 3 rods fishing 6 days caught 43 sea trout, averaging 8 pounds and the biggest of the week was an 19 pound fish, great week!

Fishing Report - 1st and 2nd week - January 2011

Fishing has started at Far end rivers Lodge. We are proud to be here for the 4th consecutive season and keep on catching fish on our favorite river!

OVERALL CONDITIONS: The river was looking perfectly from the beginning, with a normal level and clear water we started catching fish. After a couple of days we had some showers which made the river 10 centimeters higher and muddy for less than half a day, perfect!

RIVER CONDITIONS: We were able to fish the Irigoyen river the whole weeks. The river dropped continuously trough out the weeks. The water was very clear and the level dropped until some rain fall, got colored and 10 centimeters higher, dropped and cleared quickly.

FISHING : We caught some fish and lost some in logs or just cause the hooked came off, fish were taking very fast, touch and go! We hooked some very large fish but unfortunately the leader broke off. Floating lines and long leaders were used with very small flies (wonder bugs and other king of rubber legs). The size of the fish landed ranged from 4 to 16 pounds.

TOTAL CATCHES: On first week 4 rods fishing 6 days caught 20 sea trout averaging 7 pounds and the biggest of the week was an 16 pounder.

Fishing Report - NPFC - Jan 9 to Jan 15

The Northern Patagonia Fishing Club received our anglers with splendid weather and river conditions. We had sunny days with very soft winds, which allowed us to spot lots of fish and experience the thrill of fly fishing at its most. Dry flies worked awesomely and sight casting was this week’s vedette.

This week showed beyond doubt that we have bumped into a unique place in Northern Patagonia. I’ve been fishing all around this area since I started fly fishing 16 years ago, and I have never seen such special spots like our secret rivers. The latter remind me of the type of fishing found in New Zeland with lots of pocket water and deep clear water pools that hold big wild browns and rainbows.

Alumine RIver

The weather this week was great, enabling us to do an overnight camp in the mid section of the river. The anglers stayed in a comfy super-tent with all basic accommodations in the middle of the patagonian fields and enjoyed a real argentinean barbecue under the star-spangled night. On the first day of the float trip the fishing was really good during the morning and late afternoon. At noon a strong wind started blowing for a couple hours, making fishing from the boat slightly tougher. Anyway, it didn’t stop Matt and Campbell from catching fish. They landed around 15 superb specimens each and missed lots of strikes. On the second day the wind was much calmer so trouts were much conspicuous while feeding under the trees or going for spinners in the big back eddies.

Early mornings and late afternoons in the Alumine River are the best time for dry fly fishing ,as it is then when the hatch takes place. At noon it is better to put away the dry flies, and go for the fish with a sinking line and a streamer. The other bet is to stay on dry flies, but giving big terrestrials like a chernobyl ant or fat alberts a shot instead.

When using dry flies, missing strikes is expected as many times anglers set the hook too quickly to the hungry fish.

Secret Rivers

The Secret rivers’ water level was at its best shape, the water was limpid and trouts were electric. In these secret spots, quality and not quantity should be expected. Fishing on these one-of-a-kind paradises was mind-blowing; every single day we fished them we saw loads of huge browns around 20 to 25 inches and plenty of 19 to 23 inch rainbows. We caught some really big ones. Browns are less forgiving when presentation of the fly is not accurate on the first cast. They are old and really wild and not familiar with people or atypical noises in the water. On the first day we hooked around 10 browns over 22/23 inches. Hooking the fish is not the hardest part, landing is, as these sagacious trouts know their holes very well, and as soon as they feel the sharp metal hook in their mouths, they dash into the holes, breaking the line most of the times. On these spots we generally use 5x tippet so the fish is to be played very gently. That first day we landed around 4 big browns and 3 big rainbows close to 20 inch ones.

Quillen River

Quillen River was in a fine shape and trouts there were crazy. We fished the upper part which has mostly slow water, clear sandy muddy bottoms and lots of weed patches. In this river, fish are supposedly found feeding next to the sand bars, but this time, they were amazingly jumping like mad around 5 feet out of the water trying to catch dragon flies.

We had lots of action on dry flies during the morning, mostly skating big stimulators or terrestrials. At noon, as expected, the wind started to blow a little stronger so we went deeper with some bead-head woolly buggers, trying to imitate dragon fly nymphs. It was a non-stop fishing day and we landed tones of fish in every size range, from little ones to some very big ones. We landed a couple of 20 inch browns and several 14/18 inch rainbows.

In the afternoon we returned to dry flies, using smaller ones like #20 parachute adams to fish the pools’ tails, right next to the tree line. This was great for spotting soft rising fish, and trying soft drifts while waiting for “that gentle take”, followed by a couple of jumps and a good run.

Calfiquitra River

The Calfiquitra river surprised us with the best fishing day of the week, with all three species present, in good quantity and sizes. We landed around 40 fish, all of them in outstanding sizes.

The Calfiquitra offers a different scenario for fishing, casting there is easier because river banks are mostly free of trees and bushes. Nonetheless, anglers must be really careful when approaching the water. The structure of the river is great to spot fish, there are small pools and trouts are sitting on the head of the pools, right under the tail of the current, eager for food. In this river, the ideal way to approach the water is from behind, making a soft upstream cast and let the fly drift slowly in front of the fish. The fish in the Calfiquitra are less high-maintenance than in the Secret rivers in terms of presentation and spookiness. What’s marvelous about the Calfiquitra River is that it holds all 3 species found North Patagonia: browns, rainbows and brooks. What’s even better, is that our lucky anglers caught them all. They landed around 15 Browns, 23 rainbows and 2 fine-sized brookies. In their own words, “it was the best freshwater fishing in our life”.

River Condition and Water Clarity

• Alumine: The alumine is slowly reaching its best shape, water clarity is now perfect and the river runs softer, making the fishing more attractive and comfortable.

• Secret Rivers: All of them are in splendid shape. Water is in perfect level and the clarity is very good.

• Quillen: As we expected it to be, the Quillen is perfect and full of life. River runs slowly and all the hot spots are reachable.

Fishing Report - NPFC

December 9th to 18th

The Northern Patagonia Fishing Club received our anglers with very hard weather; some cold big storms and snow were experienced. Still, the fishing developed pretty good in our secret spots. Our first groups were some of the finest Brazilian fly anglers and they caught several good trouts, including some 4 & 5 pound rainbows and browns.

Fortunately, on the last 5 days of the fortnight the weather calmed down, remaining stable with clear skies and some wind in the afternoons, so the fishing became more active and left us with good chances of sight casting.

Some of rivers were half meter over the regular level due to the heavy rains of the first days.

Alumine RIver

The Alumine River water level started a little bit higher and stronger than what’s normal in this time of the year, thus, the fishing was more difficult on the first days. As the week went through, water level dropped and the river cleared up fast, so trout’s became quite active, striking hard on streamers in the deep pools and in the riffles. Big dry flies like Stimulators or PMX worked wonderfully in the eddies. The average fish caught per day was about 6 to 15 rainbows and a couple of fine 18 to 22 inch browns.

Secret Rivers

The Secret rivers’ water level is in its best shape, unfolding amazing scenarios for sight casting for big trout’s. These secret spots offer our anglers some of the most exciting conditions for dry fly fishing in North Patagonia. The pools and soft runs hold some big browns in the 5 pound range. In these rivers, the skills of the anglers and guides are very important, as planning and having a clever strategy are crucial. Also, a correct presentation and a good drift of the fly makes the difference when searching for big fish. Big Stimulators and Grass Hoppers are the best choice for catching the residents of these exhilarating waters. Celso was the luckiest one, landing a big brown and a 5 pound rainbow.

Pulmari River

The Pulmari River has high and clear water in the lower beat. On the first day we fished the lower bit and there were lots of mid size trouts that took quite good on dries and nymphs. Wading was not easy due to the river bottom structure, which has some deep channels in places that seem shallow. The second time we visited this river, we went to the upper bit and encountered a totally different scenario. We fished slower runs, looking for big browns, finding some of them in the deeper areas of the bit. Most of them were taking with sinking lines and big streamers.

Quillen River

The Quillen River received us with really high water because of the heavy rains of the first week. The fishing there was the tougher because of the water level. Wading and crossing across the river was almost impossible. Casio and Celso caught some good fish but they didn’t have the chance to experience the legendary Quillen River in good fishing conditions for dry flies. Anyway, they promised to come back for revenge.

Ruca Choroy Lake + Calfiquitra River

The lake displays magnificent beauty and is the best place for finding brookies around this area. Two of our guests visited the lake in search of brookies; they found some and landed a fine male. They also caught a big brown and some mid size rainbows.

Calfiquitra River is a great place to spot fish and try some dry flies. We had about twelve opportunities for sight casting for good-sized browns and a couple of brooks. The river is in great water conditions and the fishing there depends a lot on the weather condition.

River Condition and Water Clarity

• Alumine: was high and murky after the rains. Now it is clear with good water level. It still remains a little bit strong though.

• Secret Rivers: All of them are in great shape. Water is in perfect level and the clarity is very good.

• Pulmari: The water is clear but remains high for wadding in the lower bit. It is in really good conditions in the upper bit.

• Quillen: it started with high but clear water; it is dropping slowly, which foresees good fishing for the next group.

Summary of the week

These first two weeks where really fascinating, finding new places in Northern Patagonia, some of them almost untamed. Fishing during the first week was unstable because of the bad weather; nonetheless it had lots of great moments and very good fish. The second week had great weather except for some strong winds in the afternoons. Fishing was more stable and enabled more opportunities to spot fish and sight cast to them.

The entire guests left NPFC very happy with the lodge and fishing. All off them said they would like to come back later in the season to experience some dry fly fishing and different river conditions and really enjoy this new challenge in Patagonia.

Early December Fishing Report

Another interesting month on the St Joseph and Poivre attols.

Just taking a look at that school of bones in St Joseph show that we couldn’t have posted enough Bonefish photos so we show you al the rest of the species we have been catching these days.

The brawns joined us for two weeks and after trying very hard we caught the first Permit of the season and a few days Later Jean Baptiste Vidal current Kau-Tapen Manager and Tsimane guide caught the 1^st Trigger fish.

We had chances for GTs almost every day and hooked a few, some broke on the coral bommies and an over a meter one went with line and everything because a of a knot deep into the backing. We are still trying to get over that.

As a trade of, we did some teasing for Sails a couple of days, we could boat three of them. Wahoos joint the party as well, some of them very big.

Poivre and St Josephs reefs provided us with even more species: Thick lipped, Yellow Spotted, Golden and Blue fin Trevalles, Jobfish, Baracudas, Boa Snappers among others.

Tsimane Newsletter – Tropical Disease Info

Leishmaniasis

1. General Information:

Leishmaniasis (LEASH-ma-NIGH-a-sis) is a parasitic disease spread by the bite of infected sand flies.

The disease is carried by infected sand flies – please note not all sand flies are carriers – and can cause open sores in addition to other health complications. Presently there is not a preventive inoculation or medications such as we see with Yellow Fever or Malaria and no early detection method available. That said, like many worldwide health issues, the best method of addressing this issue is to be aware and prepare.

Leishmaniasis is found in parts of about 88 countries. Approximately 350 million people live in these areas. Most of the affected countries are in the tropics and subtropics. The settings in which leishmaniasis is found range from rain forests in Central and South America to deserts in West Asia.

Leishmaniasis is found in some parts of the following areas: Mexico, Central America, and South America—from northern Argentina to Texas (not in Uruguay, Chile, or Canada); southern Europe; Asia; the Middle East and Africa. An estimated 14 million people are infected, and each year about two million new cases occur. (WHO Report – April 2007)

Leishmaniasis Risk Area - Americas

The strain of Leishmaniasis that has been diagnosed in the four cases is Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, which is the more common strain of the disease and accounts for approximately 1.5 million cases per year world wide. This disease has two major groups. The Visceral and the Cutaneous. It’s important to register that 90% of leishmaniasis cases in South America are cutaneous. The Visceral variety cases are found - 90% in Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Nepal and Sudan. For Example in South Europe - the Mediterranean Countries, the risk for a mucose-cutaneous or visceral kind higher. – (WHO Report – 2007)

The leishmaniasis is a common disease in Amazon jungle in all environments. In Brazil, Manaus town has hundreds of cases every year. Many anglers that ever fished Brazilian Amazon, might know Manaus town. Manaus town has high risk of being bitten by the sand fly that transmit leishmaniasis. (The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene – 2001).

The leishmaniasis sand fly is found in Santa Cruz town also, and the number of cases per capita in Manaus is two times bigger when compared with Bolivia. This kind of comparison is just informative, to let all know the dimension of this disease, and where and how they are spread out. But this do not means that we won’t will be the first on take effective and serious measures to control and prevent all tropical diseases at our area. No other fishing operation in South America did this before

So with these facts its important to dispell the myth of Leishmaniasis – Leishmaniasis is NOT some new found disease or epidemic outbreak as some might indicate. Leishmaniasis is found worldwide and is well documented in the world’s medical field. It is more a “fact” of being in the wild rather than a reason not to visit the remote reaches of this great planet. Tsimane has not had an “outbreak”, they have had a few clients and staff members experience this situation, are making guests aware of the issue and are taking educated measures. Much like guests in Africa must be aware of Denge Fever, or visiters to the East Cost of United States must be cognicent of Lymes Disease. The same for anglers that visit the Amazon for Malaria, Yellow Fever and also Leishmaniasis.

Untamed Angling has been in Bolivia since 5 years ago and we have records of more than more than 350 visitors (guests and staff personal) into this area. And the most important thing, this cases occurred when we were not prepared with specific prevention measures against sand flies. We recommended in our pre trip itinerary and outfitting guide for last season that all anglers should be prepared with long pants, long sleeve shirts and bug repellents as any other Amazon fishery.

As you can experience – Tsimane is not affected by more mosquitoes as other jungle fisheries, and this made people relax and wear shot sleeved shirts and pants when on the lodge or during the charter flights transfer days during last season. All angling community can rest assure that Untamed Angling is taking all prevention measures to control it, by many ways.

2- Effective Prevention Measures:

Untamed Angling hired the best tropical disease specialists in Brazil (who are the best on tropical diseases in South America and probably in the world), to work on a extensive prevention guide for Tsimane lodge operation and guests prevention. Here we present a brief resume of all effective prevention measures that Untamed Angling is taking. We're not measuring efforts to reduce the risks for guests and staff the minimal possible all year round and not only during fishing season.

If we act on infrastructure and guests protection the risk will decrease a lot for any kind of mosquitoes and sand flies bites. These are the two paths to follow on the preventive measures.

Untamed angling also have a procedure manual for our lodge operation and to our staff where all need to pay attention and care that customers are protected permanently with bug repellents, long sleeve shirts and long pants,

Also we think we may speak about recommendations not only because of leishmanniasis. All Amazon jungle areas has other mosquito diseases that cannot be prevented by anything but protection and guards.

How is leishmaniasis prevented?

The best way for travelers to prevent leishmaniasis is by protecting themselves from sand fly bites. Vaccines and drugs for preventing infection are not yet available. To decrease their risk of being bitten, Untamed Angling joined a group of procedures that need to be followed.

1. Guests

- All anglers should follow these recommendations, and guides will take care of it, being proactive:

- When outside, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks. Tuck your shirt into your pants.

- Apply insect repellent on uncovered skin and under the ends of sleeves and pant legs. Follow the instructions on the label of the repellent. The most effective repellents are those that contain the chemical DEET (N,N-diethylmetatoluamide). The concentration of DEET varies among repellents. Repellents with DEET concentrations of 30%-35% are quite effective, and the effect should last about 4 hours. Reapply every 4 hours when outside. Lower concentrations should be used for children (no more than 10% DEET).

- Spray clothing with permethrin-containing insecticides. The insecticide should be reapplied after every five washings.

2. Lodge Prevention Rules:

Untamed Angling is committed in a procedure manual to increase infra structure protection and staff members will take care of all guests protection being proactive.

- Spray living and sleeping areas with an insecticide to kill insects.

- Wash clothing with permethrin-containing insecticides. The insecticide should be reapplied after every five washings. The lodge will wash all fishing bed clothes and guests clothes with Permethrin insecticides.

- Guests will receive a fishing shirt (permethrin washed) once in Santa Cruz.

- Constant fumigation procedures on all buildings with appropriate insecticide.

- Mosquito nets on beds and screens. All use a bed net that has been soaked in or sprayed with permethrin. The permethrin will be effective for several months if the bed net is not washed.

- Lodge will separate the bathroom area and the area to change the clothes with mosquito screen doors.

What are the signs and symptoms of cutaneous leishmaniasis?

People who have cutaneous leishmaniasis have one or more sores on their skin. The sores can change in size and appearance over time. They often end up looking somewhat like a volcano, with a raised edge and central crater. Some sores are covered by a scab. The sores can be painless or painful. Some people have swollen glands near the sores (for example, under the arm if the sores are on the arm or hand).

How is leishmaniasis spread?

Leishmaniasis is spread by the bite of some types of phlebotomine sand flies. Sand flies become infected by biting an infected animal (for example, a rodent or dog) or person. Since sand flies do not make noise when they fly, people may not realize they are present. Sand flies are very small and may be hard to see; they are only about one-third the size of typical mosquitoes. Sand flies usually are most active in twilight, evening, and night-time hours (from dusk to dawn). Sand flies are less active during the hottest time of the day. However, they will bite if they are disturbed, such as when a person brushes up against the trunk of a tree where sand flies are resting.

If I were bitten by an infected sand fly, how quickly would I become sick?

People with cutaneous leishmaniasis usually develop skin sores within a few weeks (sometimes as long as months) of when they were bitten.

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis has an approximate incubation period of two to eight months alhtough it can be longer in certain cases. So here are a few things to look for and to bring to your general physician’s attention in the unlikely case you should need to as early detection and treatment is best:

• Skin sores – very slow to heal

• Ulcers and wearing away (erosion) in the mouth, tongue, gums, lips, nose, and inner nose

• Stuffy nose, runny nose, and nosebleeds – non-cold related

• Newly developed breathing difficulty

• Uncommon swallowing difficulty

Can leishmaniasis be a serious disease if not treated?

Yes, it can be. The skin sores of cutaneous leishmaniasis will heal on their own, but this can take months or even years. The sores can leave scars. If not treated, infection that started in the skin rarely spreads to the nose or mouth and causes sores there (mucosal leishmaniasis). This can happen with some of the types of the parasite found in Central and South America. Mucosal leishmaniasis might not be noticed until years after the original skin sores healed. The best way to prevent mucosal leishmaniasis is to treat the cutaneous infection before it spreads.

How will my health care provider know if I have leishmaniasis?

The first step is to find out if you have traveled to a part of the world where leishmaniasis is found. Your health care provider will ask you about any signs or symptoms of leishmaniasis you may have, such as skin sores that have not healed. If you have skin sores, your health care provider will likely want to take some samples directly from the sores. These samples can be examined for the parasite under a microscope, in cultures, and through other means. A blood test for detecting antibody (immune response) to the parasite can be helpful. However, tests to look for the parasite itself should also be done. CDC staff can help with the laboratory testing.

How is leishmaniasis treated?

Your health care provider can talk with CDC staff about whether your case of leishmaniasis should be treated, and, if so, how. Most people who have cutaneous leishmaniasis do not need to be hospitalized during their treatment.

Desroches - Fishing Reports

October 22nd to 30th:

Felipe Morales and Ronnie Butler experienced their trip with some days at Remire and African Banks atolls them finished at Poivre and St. Joseph. Also was the first scouting trip of the season on Remire and African Banks made by our team. Marcelo, Michela, Murray completed the anglers team. Unfortunately they took bad weather on the first part of the trip, but had exciting moments with a good number of medium sized bones and a wide variety of species. The scenery is stunning and the fishing grounds are incredibly good. On december another scouting trip is planned to these two atolls.

On next days they fished Poivre and St. Joseph, they had many bonefish, some bluefins and Gt's. Also the sharks on the fly made Felipe very happy.

November 6th to 13th:

We enjoy the presence of Mr Daniel Prisloo and his wife on the second week of November on which was his 1^st saltwater experience. Unfortunately a very bad weather front caused by a major low pressure system in the north east Indian Ocean, very strange for this time of the year by the way, restrained us of going out at all on Sunday and to go to the flats on Monday when we did Blue-water fishing around Desroches.

In that morning we raised 9 Sailfish, 5 of them took the fly, 2 of those were not properly hooked and fly came out before 5 seconds and the other 3 broke the leader, the line (got tangled in the boat) and the backing (got tangled in the propeller) and no fish were boated, but that was certainly a good start to fishing in the salt for Daniel. He was pure excitement after seeing his reel spooled by a fish in the air more than 200 meters from the boat.

The next 3 days we fished St Joseph and Poivre atolls while Daniel’s wife spoiled herself with Spa treatments and massages at Desroches. Two guest form the hotel joined us on Wednesday and Thursday. The strong spring tides of the week did not give too much time for the fish to get into the flats and the fishing was quite focused in some specific spots. In these days Daniel caught over 20 bones averaging 4-5 pounds including 2 around 6 pounds. The Permits on Poivre were no saw at all.

Daniel is very happy with his experience and is willing to come again in January.

November 13th to 20th:

Mr. Broccard and Mr. DeSheeper were our guest this week, both of them experienced saltwater fly-fishermen. The first two days we suffered very low visibility on the flats but we managed to land good amounts of bones plus a nice lemon shark on the flats in the 50-60 pounds range.

With great weather and nice neap pushing tides, the fishing at Poivre the last three days was phenomenal. The moments when we had no Permits on sight were rare. Even when we couldn’t land any, we casted to over 20 tailing Permits a day in the flats. We also saw some big Triggerfish and some schools of Yellow Spotted Trevalle. On Friday a big GT (80 pound plus) was spotted following a nurse shark but we were not able to put the fly since he was moving to fast.

A True Patagonian Experience - Aluminé is located in the province of Neuquen in extreme northern Patagonia, Argentina. Reminiscent of northern New Mexico or southern Colorado, this area is home to several important rivers and lakes that are seldom fished.

Wonderful FlyFishing - While all fishing techniques work here, the distinguishing feature of this region is the abundance of great dry fly fishing water. The often prolific insect hatches and gentler waters provide discriminating anglers with some wonderful ‘match-the-hatch’ sight fishing possibilities.

Desroches Flyfishing Adventures - Season 2010/11 - We are ready to start!

We are proud to start our 2010/11 season at Seychelles! We have some very important improvements for the upcoming season. Some of them are: a new land base option in Remiere Island for 8 anglers which allow us to fish with skiffs Remiere flats area and the nearby and legendary African Banks Atolls. The possibilities of Gt's and good permits are truly real and we will be starting this season exploratory trips on late October. We offer 5 exclusive weeks for Remiere/African Banks option: Jan 15th-22nd, Jan 22nd-29th, Mar 12th-19th, Mar 19th-26th and Mar 26th - Apr 2nd.

We are going to have skiffs on St. Joseph after November which allow anglers to cover much more water per day of fishing.

Joaquin Arocena, will be our operation manager at Desroches. He is a very experienced manager and senior guide. Our guides team are: Llewelling Claven, Jim Welsh and Matthieu Cosson. All of them are senior guides with excellent knowledge about seychelles guiding.
